Inkosi Brou headlines Nigeria's charge at African Fencing Championships

Nigeria will look to strengthen its growing reputation in fencing when it competes at the 2026 African Senior Fencing Championships in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, with teenage sensation Inkosi Brou leading the charge.

The continental showpiece, scheduled for May 31 to June 6, will see Nigeria’s top-ranked fencer spearhead the team in what marks his second appearance on the big stage, one that continues to shape his rapid ascent in the sport.

At just 18, Brou has already etched his name into Nigerian fencing history. The Nigerian-American prodigy recently broke into the global Top 10 of the Men’s Sabre Junior rankings, becoming the first athlete from the country to achieve the feat. Since switching allegiance to Nigeria in October 2023, despite being born and raised in the United States, his rise has been nothing short of remarkable.

His breakthrough moment came in 2024, when he claimed Nigeria’s first-ever international fencing medal, securing silver at the World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Iceland, an achievement that signaled his arrival on the global stage.

For the Abidjan campaign, Brou will be joined in the men’s sabre event by Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye and Phoenix Zaoku-Sabre. Akinyosoye, 21, impressed on home soil at the 2025 edition in Lagos, where he reached the quarterfinals, and will be aiming to push even deeper this time. The UK-based fencer, who previously represented England at youth level, brings both experience and ambition to the squad.

As for Brou, his journey is firmly fixed on a bigger horizon. Regular appearances on the FIE World Cup circuit are part of his long-term mission to qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, a dream that would see him become Nigeria’s first Olympic fencer.

Expectations are steadily rising, but so is confidence within the Nigerian camp. National coach Ibrahim Alogba believes the team is well-positioned to deliver, while also highlighting the importance of blending local and foreign-based talent.

“I am confident in the team. Hopefully, we can have more local-based athletes joining their foreign-based counterparts. This tournament is excellent preparation for the 2026 Commonwealth Championships later this year,” Alogba noted.
