Nigerian teen Seun Ogunsakin makes history with Wimbledon Junior main draw qualification
Ekiti-born teenage tennis star Seun Ogunsakin has etched his name into Nigerian tennis history after qualifying for the main draw of the Wimbledon Junior Championships.
The 17-year-old secured his place with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 victory over Canada's Benjamin Azar, the tournament's eighth seed, in the final round of qualifying at Roehampton, London.
Ogunsakin delivered an assured performance from start to finish, showcasing his growing talent on the international junior circuit. Nicknamed "Seun Shark," the Nigerian dropped just four games in the contest as he comfortably sealed one of the coveted spots in the boys' singles main draw.
His qualification marks a significant milestone, making him the first Nigerian in decades to reach the main draw of a junior Grand Slam tournament. He also stands out as the only African player to advance from the qualifying rounds into this year's Wimbledon junior singles main draw.
The historic achievement further cements Ogunsakin's rising reputation and is expected to inspire a new generation of Nigerian tennis players. He will now compete against the world's top junior talents at one of the sport's most prestigious championships.
Ogunsakin's breakthrough ends a decades-long wait for a homegrown Nigerian player to feature in the main draw of a junior Grand Slam event, representing another landmark moment for the country's tennis development.
