Kelechi Iheanacho embraces 'Agabey' nickname after historic Turkish scoring feat

Nigeriap forward Kelechi Iheanacho has embraced a new identity in Turkish football after extending his remarkable scoring streak to 10 consecutive league matches, becoming the first player to achieve the feat in Turkish professional league history.

The 30 year old celebrated the milestone on social media after delivering a superb performance in Bursaspor’s 3-0 victory over Muglaspor in the Turkish 1. Lig on Thursday.

Iheanacho, who scored twice and provided an assist, posted a picture of himself dressed in traditional Turkish attire with the caption, “We go ball till eternity, Kelechi Agabey.” The nickname “Agabey” is a Turkish term of respect that translates to “Big Brother” or “Boss”.

The former Manchester City and Leicester City striker initially thought he had opened the scoring in the 51st minute, but his effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

He eventually broke the deadlock in the 58th minute before doubling Bursaspor’s advantage in the 79th minute. Iheanacho then turned provider four minutes later, setting up substitute Hüseyin Maldar to complete the emphatic victory.

His latest performance further underlines his impressive start to life in Turkey following his move from Celtic. Iheanacho has now scored in all 10 league appearances for Bursaspor, taking his tally to 14 goals and three assists.

His scoring run has also extended to 11 consecutive matches when his appearance for Nigeria’s Super Eagles is included.

The victory strengthened Bursaspor’s promotion ambitions, moving them into second place on 22 points, two ahead of third placed Iğdır FK and three behind league leaders Kayserispor.

With the top two teams earning automatic promotion to the Turkish Super Lig, Iheanacho’s goals could prove crucial as the campaign progresses.

Bursaspor will welcome Pendikspor on Monday, hoping to build on their impressive form and maintain their position among the promotion contenders.
