Flying Eagles soar into WAFU-B Boys Cup semifinals with emphatic win over Benin Republic
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles bounced back in style from their opening draw against Ghana, securing a dominant 4–1 victory over Benin Republic in their final Group A match of the 2025 WAFU Zone B U-20 Boys Cup on Sunday in Accra.
The win, recorded at the University of Ghana’s Prampram Centre, ensured Nigeria’s place in the semi-finals as they concluded the group stage with four points from two games.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, however. Benin Republic took an early lead in the 24th minute when Junior Olugbade bent a brilliant free-kick into the bottom corner, leaving the Flying Eagles stunned and chasing the game.
Much like their spirited performance in the 1–1 opener against Ghana, Nigeria responded well. In the 39th minute, striker Muhammed Abdullahi pulled the team level after a slick combination with Divine Oliseh, calmly slotting home past the Beninese goalkeeper. It was Abdullahi’s second goal in as many games, further underlining his importance to Aliyu Zubairu’s side.
The first half ended 1–1 with all to play for, but Nigeria emerged from the break the stronger side.
Ezekiel Kpangu fired the Flying Eagles into the lead with a composed finish following a well-worked team move. With their confidence growing, Nigeria seized full control of the game.
In the 86th minute, Imrana Mohammed added a third goal, expertly beating his marker before finishing clinically. Just moments later, he turned provider, setting up Abdullahi Majdid, whose powerful strike from outside the box left goalkeeper Majdid Mohammed with no chance.
Sporting Lagos full-back Odinaka Okoro was named Man of the Match for his commanding performance on the left flank. He received his award from Benin Republic’s head of delegation, Innocent Atindehou, and WAFU B executive director, Philippe Tchere.
With the result, Nigeria now await the outcome of Wednesday’s final Group A match between Ghana and Benin Republic to determine their final placement in the group.
Elsewhere, Group B action resumes today (Monday) as Niger take on Ivory Coast, while Burkina Faso face Togo. The group phase concludes on Thursday, with Togo meeting Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso battling Niger.
Nigeria, the defending champions of the WAFU Zone B U-20 tournament, are on course for another title run as they look to book a return to the final.
