President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Engineer Ahmadu Musa Kida, has ruled out seeking a third term in office, ending weeks of speculation over his plans ahead of the federation’s 2026 elections.

 Kida made the clarification during the NBBF Extraordinary Congress held at City Green Hotel in Yola, Adamawa State, on Thursday, September 25, 2026. The congress was attended by 39 delegates representing various stakeholders in Nigerian basketball.

 “Contrary to news making the rounds about my ambitions, I have never been part of subverting the NBBF approved constitution in seeking a third term,” Kida told the delegates.

 “I intend to ensure a free, fair and transparent election to the next Board for 2026 to 2030.”

 The NBBF president also urged all prospective candidates to participate in the electoral process with respect and dignity.

 “I urge all those interested in elective positions to feel free to contest. All politicking should be done with honour and dignity. We must avoid derogatory and defamatory comments against each other,” he said.

 The congress unanimously approved October 15, 2026, as the date for the NBBF Elective Congress in Abuja, with proceedings scheduled to begin at 10am.

 Elections for Technical Representatives, Players Representatives and other affiliate bodies will take place between October 7 and 14 in Abuja.

 A seven-member Electoral Committee was also constituted, with Dr Lanre Glover appointed chairman. Sr Femi Olugbile, Alhaji Sani Fema, Engineer Priscilla Ngozi Iroaganachi, Major General David Lubo and Mallam Farouk Yarma will serve as members, while Barrister Ichene Kalu will act as secretary.

 The congress also approved a three-member Elections Appeals Committee comprising Barrister Emmanuel Okibe as chairman, Ms Chichi Nwoko as member and Mr Emmanuel Zira as secretary.

 As part of the congress proceedings, financial reports covering 2024, 2025 and 2026 were presented and approved by the delegates.

 The Secretary General’s updated activities report was also presented and endorsed.

 Kida said the federation had encountered several challenges since 2017 but had emerged stronger from each period of difficulty.

 “The Federation has always come out stronger on each occasion,” he told the congress.

 Kida expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fulfilling commitments made to D’Tigress following their historic fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title.

 He also commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission, particularly Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Chief Bukola Olopade, for their support for Nigerian basketball.

 The NBBF president further thanked the Adamawa State Government, the Adamawa State Basketball Association and the state sports directorate for hosting the Extraordinary Congress at short notice and providing logistical support.

 With Kida confirming that he will not seek another term and the electoral committees now constituted, attention will turn to the candidates seeking to lead the NBBF from 2026 to 2030.

 The October 15 election will determine the federation’s next board and mark the beginning of a new leadership cycle for Nigerian basketball.

 Kida’s decision brings an end to speculation surrounding his tenure and sets the stage for a competitive succession process ahead of the elective congress.
