Mustapha Hadji admits Morocco's AFCON triumph feels hollow

Former Morocco international Mustapha Hadji has offered a candid reaction to his country’s off-field coronation as champions of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, admitting the victory lacks its true essence despite being legally justified.

Speaking in the aftermath of the controversial decision, Hadji insisted that due process had ultimately been followed, stressing that “the laws of football” must always be upheld.

He argued that Morocco’s position was grounded in regulation, noting that situations warranting abandonment of a match should involve serious threats such as player safety concerns not disagreements over officiating decisions.

However, the former winger did not shy away from criticizing how the situation was handled by Confederation of African Football. He described the process as flawed and unnecessarily prolonged, pointing out that the initial ruling did not favor Morocco, making the final outcome even more contentious.

Hadji also highlighted a key issue during the match itself, revealing that the referee was left to make critical decisions without adequate institutional support.

According to him, officials who should have been present to guide and enforce the rules failed in their responsibilities, ultimately contributing to the chaos that followed.

While acknowledging the joy among Moroccans at being crowned African champions, Hadji admitted the triumph feels “like a gift” rather than a victory earned on the pitch.

He placed the blame squarely on CAF, calling for more competent decision making structures to ensure such controversies are avoided in the future.

The situation continues to stir debate across African football, with questions lingering over governance, officiating standards, and the integrity of major continental competitions.
