NPFL: Abia Warriors go top after hard fought victory

Abia Warriors climbed to the summit of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table after a 2-1 away victory over Niger Tornadoes in Minna.

In one of Sunday’s Matchday 11 fixtures, Imama Amapakabo’s men stormed into a two-goal lead at halftime courtesy of Sunday Megwo’s opener and an own goal from Sunday Akinmoladun. The hosts pulled one back through Abdulrasheed Dabai shortly before the hour mark, but the Umuahia-based side held firm to secure another impressive win on the road.

The result sees Abia Warriors move top of the log with 21 points from 11 matches, while Tornadoes drop to fifth following their first home defeat of the campaign.

Elsewhere in Lagos, Ikorodu City cruised past Kun Khalifat to move into third place, with goals from Chidera Oparaocha and Dagogo Ibifibura sealing the points.

In Aba, Enyimba returned to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Kano Pillars. First-half strikes from Edidiong Ezekiel and John Bassey helped the former champions snap a three-game losing streak.

Rivers United also claimed a narrow 1-0 win against Nasarawa United in Port Harcourt, thanks to Timothy Zachariah’s decisive goal, the forward continuing his fine form after his CAF Champions League heroics.

It ended goalless in Maiduguri between El-Kanemi Warriors and Rangers, as well as in Kano, where Barau and Wikki Tourists shared the spoils. In Ibadan, Shooting Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Katsina United.

Saturday’s fixtures saw Bendel Insurance and Warri Wolves settle for a 1-1 draw, while Kwara United stunned defending champions Remo Stars 3-1 in Ilorin.

Meanwhile, the outstanding games between Remo Stars and Nasarawa United, and Bendel Insurance and Rivers United, are scheduled to be played midweek.
