NPFL promotion race goes down the wire as Sporting Lagos and Akwa United set for final day showdown
The battle for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has come down to a thrilling final-day decider, with Sporting Lagos and Akwa United locked in a tense race for the last available ticket from the Nigeria National League (NNL).
Both sides have matched each other stride for stride since the early weeks of the campaign, and now, after months of relentless competition, only one can claim a return to the top flight.
Sporting Lagos took a decisive step forward on Wednesday, edging Rovers FC 1-0 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan. Alex Leme’s first-half strike proved the difference in a tightly contested encounter, as the Lagos-based side held firm to secure all three points and keep their promotion dream firmly intact.
That victory saw Sporting Lagos climb to the summit of the standings with 33 points, overtaking Akwa United, who sit just one point behind on 32. With such fine margins separating the two sides, the final matchday on April 15 promises high drama.
For Sporting Lagos, the equation is simple: win and return to the NPFL at the first time of asking following their relegation in 2024. They face a trip to Ile-Ogbo against an Osun United side battling at the wrong end of the table.
Akwa United, meanwhile, must do their part on the road against Solution FC at the Awka Township Stadium while hoping for a slip from their direct rivals. Anything short of victory, coupled with a Sporting Lagos win, would end their promotion hopes.
Elsewhere, Doma United and Inter Lagos have already secured their places in the 2026/27 NPFL season, leaving the spotlight firmly on the Southern Conference’s dramatic conclusion.
