NPFL set for financial windfall as new sponsor nears announcement
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) could be on the verge of a major commercial breakthrough, with a multi-billion naira sponsorship deal reportedly nearing completion.
The proposed partnership is expected to inject significant financial resources into the domestic top flight while strengthening the organisation, commercial appeal and overall standard of the competition.
A senior official of the National Sports Commission (NSC), who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that negotiations with the prospective sponsor have reached an advanced stage.
According to the official, the sponsorship announcement is expected to coincide with the unveiling of the new NPFL chairman.
“Let me reveal this to you. As soon as the new league chairman is unveiled, a league sponsor that will bring in billions of naira will also be unveiled to boost the standard of the league,” the source said.
The anticipated financial boost comes at a significant period for the NPFL, which has already commenced its new season amid leadership uncertainty within Nigerian football.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has recently been hit by the resignation of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the NFF Executive Committee.
Despite the leadership changes, the NPFL is expected to continue with the new season.
If concluded, the proposed sponsorship would represent another significant step in the commercial development of the league.
The NPFL previously secured a three-year sponsorship agreement during the tenure of former chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye, with the deal reportedly valued at $2.5 million annually, amounting to $7.5 million over the three-year period.
The latest proposal is expected to surpass that financial commitment, potentially providing the league with greater resources to improve its operations, commercial structure, visibility and overall quality.
A stronger financial foundation could also benefit participating clubs and other stakeholders through improved organisation and increased investment in domestic football.
However, the identity of the prospective sponsor and the exact value of the proposed agreement have not been disclosed.
Both details are expected to be made public alongside the formal unveiling of the new NPFL chairman.
With a potentially substantial financial package waiting to enter the domestic league, the appointment of the new chairman could therefore represent more than a change in leadership.
It could mark the beginning of a new commercial chapter for Nigerian top-flight football.
