2026/27 NPFL season gets tentative calendar
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has pencilled August 27 to 29, 2026, for the opening weekend of the 2026/27 season following a joint stakeholders' meeting involving the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), NPFL management and club owners in Abuja.
The proposed calendar will see the campaign run through to May 28, 2027, while also making provision for the President Federation Cup to ensure a more structured and predictable domestic football schedule. The move is part of ongoing efforts to improve planning, enhance professionalism and align Nigeria's top flight league with global best practices.
One of the biggest attractions of the new season will be the record breaking N1 billion prize for the eventual league champions, announced by National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko.
The unprecedented reward is expected to boost the league's commercial value, increase competition among clubs and attract fresh investment into Nigerian football.
The 2026/27 NPFL campaign will also welcome four newly promoted clubs from the Nigeria National League (NNL). Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Ranchers Bees and Doma United earned promotion after impressive performances during the 2025/26 NNL season and will replace the four relegated teams from the just-concluded top flight campaign.
They will join defending champions Enugu Rangers, who secured their ninth NPFL title by finishing top of the standings in the 2025/26 season. Football stakeholders believe the proposed calendar and enhanced financial incentives will further strengthen the league's organisation, improve club planning and accelerate the commercial growth of Nigeria's elite domestic competition.
