Nigeria claims relay gold at Islamic Solidarity Games

 

 

Nigeria continued their impressive run at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with standout performances across athletics and wrestling.

 

The women’s 4x100m relay team delivered one of the nation’s biggest highlights, storming to gold in 44.27 seconds. The quartet of Iyanuoluwa Bada, Miracle Ezechukwu, Maria Thompson, and Chioma Nweke held off a late surge from Bahrain, who finished in 44.47s, while Gambia settled for bronze in 45.05s.

 

In the men’s 4x100m relay, the team of John Caleb, Chidera Ezeakor, Ezekiel Asuquo, and James Taiwo Emmanuel battled to a bronze, finishing behind hosts Saudi Arabia, who claimed gold, and Oman, who took silver.

 

Nigeria’s wrestlers also made their mark.

 

Christianah Ogunsanya dominated the women’s freestyle 53kg class to win gold, ahead of Uzbekistan’s Shokhida Akhmedova. Kyrgyzstan’s Aruuke K. Kyzy and Kazakhstan’s Zeinep Bayanova shared bronze.

 

In the women’s freestyle 50kg, Miesinnei M. Genesis earned silver, finishing behind Uzbekistan’s Aktenge Keunimjaeva and ahead of Azerbaijan’s Elnura Mammadova.

 

On the track, Patience Okon-George added another medal with a silver in the women’s 400m, clocking 51.93s. She finished just behind Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser (51.59s), while Uganda’s Leni Shida took bronze in 52.72s.

 

The men’s 400m final delivered drama, with Morocco’s Rachid M’hamdi winning gold in 45.40s. UAE’s Emmanuel Bamidele secured silver in 45.71s, and Nigeria’s Gafar Badmus also clocked 45.71s to clinch bronze after a photo finish. Ezekiel Asuquo was unable to complete the race.

 

In the men’s javelin throw, Samuel Kure earned another bronze for Nigeria with a throw of 76.01m, just three centimetres behind Pakistan’s Muhammad Yasir, who threw 76.04m Arshad Nadeem dominated the event to claim gold with 83.05m.

 

With these results, Nigeria now sits ninth on the overall medal table with 25 medals: 8 gold, 10 silver, and 7 bronze.
