Nigeria-eligible midfielder Huang Shenghao has received his first call-up to the China senior national team, putting the 19-year-old in contention for a potentially historic international debut.

Born in Guangzhou in 2007 to a Chinese mother and Nigerian father, Huang has emerged as one of the promising young midfielders in Chinese football and currently plays for China League One side Guangdong GZ-Power. 

The defensive midfielder’s senior invitation follows an impressive showing for China’s U19 team at the 2026 Maurice Revello Tournament, commonly known as the Toulon Tournament.

Huang started and completed all four of China’s matches at the tournament, with his tackling, defensive awareness and composed performances reportedly catching the attention of senior national team coach Shao Jiayi. 

His selection also marks a significant milestone for Guangdong GZ-Power, with the club confirming that Huang is the first player in its history to receive a senior China national team call-up while still representing the club. 

Huang has now joined China’s training camp in Chongqing ahead of the 2026 CFA China Team Chongqing International Football Invitational Tournament, scheduled to run from September 24 to October 6.

China are scheduled to face the Maldives, New Zealand, Palestine and Tajikistan during the international programme, giving Huang a potential route to his first senior appearance. 

The teenager joined Guangdong GZ-Power in August 2023 and played a role in the club’s 2024 China League Two title-winning campaign, which helped secure promotion to the second tier.

He has also continued to gain senior-level experience with the club, making 12 appearances across all competitions this season, including eight starts, according to AllNigeriaSoccer. 

Huang’s Nigerian heritage has added another layer of interest to his emergence. His father is Nigerian, while his mother is Chinese, making him eligible for Nigeria as well as China based on the reported family background.

He has represented China at youth level and has now moved directly into the senior setup, with Chinese reports describing his selection as a notable promotion for the young midfielder. 

The call-up comes at a time when Nigeria’s senior national team continues to monitor and develop players of Nigerian heritage playing outside the country.

However, Huang’s involvement with China at senior level could become particularly significant if he makes an official competitive appearance for the national team.

His immediate challenge for now is to impress during China’s training camp and earn playing time in the upcoming international fixtures.

A senior debut would represent another major step in the rapid development of the Guangzhou-born midfielder, who has progressed from China’s youth teams to the senior national setup at just 19.

With a Nigerian father and Chinese mother, Huang Shenghao’s emergence also highlights the growing number of footballers with Nigerian heritage making their mark in international football beyond Nigeria’s national teams.
