Nigeria names 24 athletes for relay in Gaborone
Nigeria has made a bold statement ahead of the 2026 World Athletics Relays, unveiling a 24-athlete squad set to compete across all six relay events in Gaborone, Botswana.
For the first time in this championship cycle, Team Nigeria will feature in every relay discipline the men’s and women’s 4x100m and 4x400m, alongside the mixed 4x100m and mixed 4x400m underlining a clear intent to be a major force when the competition runs from May 2–3.
The journey to full participation wasn’t straightforward. Nigeria had initially secured qualification in just three events the men’s and women’s 4x400m, and the mixed 4x100m. But following a World Athletics decision to allow nations apply for additional slots, the door opened. Nigeria stepped through it, completing a clean sweep of entries across all relay categories.
At the heart of the squad is a blend of proven experience and rising energy. Familiar names like Rosemary Chukwuma, Enoch Adegoke, Favour Ashe, and Patience Okon-George bring pedigree and composure, while a wave of emerging sprinters and quarter-milers adds depth, hunger, and flexibility across the relay teams.
But the challenge ahead is anything but simple.
Gaborone is set to host a stacked field, with 40 countries and over 700 athletes expected. The host nation will look to ride on the brilliance of Letsile Tebogo in the men’s 4x100m, while world 400m champion Collen Kebinatshipi strengthens their 4x400m charge.
Jamaica arrives with its usual firepower Oblique Seville leading the men, with sprint queens Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shericka Jackson headlining the women’s team. Canada boasts a formidable quartet including Andre De Grasse and Aaron Brown, while South Africa’s squad is anchored by Akani Simbine and a well-drilled 4x400m unit.
Add the United States, Spain, and other heavyweights into the mix, and the stage is set for a high-stakes, high-speed showdown.
For Nigeria, this is more than just participation it’s a declaration. Six events, one team, and a chance to not only chase medals but also secure crucial qualification spots for the 2027 World Championships in Beijing.
