Nigeria punches above weight, climbs to 24th in IBA World Boxing rankings

Nigeria has earned a strong spot on the global boxing stage, ranking 24th out of 153 countries in the International Boxing Association (IBA) 2026 world rankings.

With a total of 12,150 points, Nigeria sits ahead of traditional sporting nations like France and the United States, who are tied in 25th place with 11,500 points apiece an indication of the country’s growing presence in elite boxing circles.

At the summit of the rankings, Uzbekistan leads the way with a commanding 48,700 points, followed by Russia (40,850) and Kazakhstan (38,300). The Democratic Republic of Congo stands out as Africa’s highest-ranked nation in fourth place with 36,825 points, while Australia rounds out the top five with 33,725 points. Morocco also features prominently in sixth, while China occupies ninth position.

Nigeria’s rise reflects consistent performances across major international and continental competitions within the ranking window. The IBA system operates on a two-year rolling basis, where boxers accumulate points from events such as the Olympic Games, World Championships, Continental Championships, and the World Boxing Tour.

Under this structure, results carry weight based on both the level of competition and final placement, with older performances gradually losing value as new results come in. It is a system that rewards consistency, and Nigeria’s position suggests steady progress on that front.

For Nigerian boxing, this ranking is more than just a number; it is a signal of intent and a platform to build on as the nation continues its push for greater relevance and success on the global stage.
