Nigeria young sensation snub Manchester City, agrees IFK Göteborg switch - report

Nigeria youth international Ifeoluwa Adewale Olowoporoku has reached an agreement in principle to join Swedish giants IFK Göteborg, ending months of intense transfer interest from several top European clubs, AllNigeriaSoccer.com can exclusively report.

The highly-rated attacking midfielder, who starred for Nigeria's Golden Eaglets, is expected to complete a historic move to the 18-time Swedish champions immediately after his 18th birthday on July 15, 2026, when he becomes eligible to sign a professional contract under international transfer regulations.

The agreement will see the talented youngster pen a multi-year deal with IFK Göteborg, with the move set to become the biggest transfer in the history of Tripple 44 Football Academy.

The academy's previous record sale stood at €350,000, but Ifeoluwa's impending switch to Sweden is expected to eclipse that figure, marking a major milestone for one of Nigeria's emerging football development centres.

The race for the teenage sensation attracted interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Premier League champions Manchester City, Spanish sides Real Betis, Villarreal and Atlético Madrid, Italian outfit Torino, Swedish clubs Malmö FF, Kalmar FF and BK Häcken, as well as Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, all monitored the midfielder and explored the possibility of signing him.

Despite the fierce competition, IFK Göteborg ultimately won the race for one of Nigeria's brightest young prospects.

Sources close to the negotiations revealed that the Swedish club made the strongest impression on the player during his trial spell, convincing him that Göteborg offers the ideal environment to continue his football education and accelerate his development at senior level.

Ifeoluwa also caught the attention of Real Betis during a two-week trial in Spain, where he impressed coaches with his technical quality, creativity and attacking intelligence despite not speaking Spanish.

Meanwhile, Manchester City made significant efforts to secure the midfielder's signature by engaging a prominent football agency to facilitate negotiations. However, discussions failed to produce an agreement, allowing IFK Göteborg to move ahead of the competition.

The versatile midfielder believes the Swedish club provides the perfect pathway for regular first-team football and long-term development, a key factor behind his decision to reject interest from several bigger clubs across Europe and Africa.

Once the transfer is officially completed in July, Ifeoluwa will begin the next chapter of his promising career in Sweden, with expectations high that he could become the latest Nigerian talent to use Scandinavian football as a springboard to one of Europe's elite leagues.
