President Tinubu Declares State of Emergency in Rivers, Suspends Governor Fubara
President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.
The decision, announced in a nationwide broadcast on March 18, 2025, comes amid escalating political tensions and security concerns in the state.
As part of the emergency measures, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd.) has been appointed as the Administrator (Captain) of Rivers State, tasked with overseeing governance and security operations during the period.
The crisis stems from a deepening power struggle between Governor Fubara and factions loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor of Rivers State. Tensions heightened after the demolition of the State House of Assembly Complex, fueling fears of further instability.
The federal government has assured Rivers residents that the emergency rule is a temporary measure aimed at restoring peace and constitutional order. Security agencies have been deployed across the state, and citizens are urged to remain calm.
