Samuel Chukwueze credits Ruben Amorim's trust for Milan revival
Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze says Ruben Amorim’s faith in him and regular playing opportunities have helped restore his confidence at AC Milan after a difficult spell at the Italian club.
Chukwueze returned to Milan this summer following a loan spell at Fulham, where he scored three goals and provided four assists in 25 appearances across all competitions.
The Nigeria international endured a challenging 2024/25 campaign at Milan, managing three goals and two assists in 26 Serie A appearances. However, he has made an encouraging start to the new season under Amorim.
The 27-year-old has featured in all five of Milan’s Serie A matches this season, starting four and registering two assists.
Speaking to Footy-Africa while on international duty with Nigeria, Chukwueze said the confidence shown in him by Amorim has played a major role in his improved form.
“I just have to keep doing my best for the team and repay the confidence the coach has in me by playing well and helping the team,” the 60-cap Super Eagles star said.
“Every coach has his own style of play. Last season I wasn’t a regular, but this season has been different. The confidence is back, and I will hopefully keep showing what I can do.”
He added: “Playing 90 minutes means he has confidence in me, and I have to keep showing the coach reasons to keep playing me.”
The former Villarreal winger also acknowledged the contrast between his current situation and last season, crediting Amorim with helping him rediscover his confidence.
Amorim has also given Chukwueze a different tactical role, deploying him as a right-sided wing-back in his three-man defensive system. The Milan boss has previously backed the Nigerian to adapt to the position, pointing to his mentality and character.
The tactical adjustment has allowed Chukwueze to combine his attacking ability with greater defensive responsibility, while his two assists have helped him establish himself as a regular in Amorim’s side.
His resurgence follows an inconsistent spell at Milan and a loan move to Fulham last season, where he enjoyed more regular football before returning to Italy.
Chukwueze will now look to build on his impressive start and retain his place in Amorim’s plans when he returns to club action following Nigeria’s international engagements.
