South American foes await Nigeria in U-17 Women’s World Cup quarter-final after Germany ouster

Venezuela are set to face Nigeria’s Flamingos in the quarter-finals of the Morocco 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after eliminating Germany 1-0 in the Round of 16 in Morocco on Wednesday.

The South Americans’ progression sets up a potentially exciting last-eight encounter with Nigeria, provided the Flamingos overcome Mexico in their own knockout fixture.

Nigeria are scheduled to face South Americans Mexico on Thursday, October 29, with both teams seeking a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The Flamingos entered the knockout stage after finishing second in Group B, behind defending champions Korea DPR.

Nigeria recorded victories over Puerto Rico and Korea DPR after opening their campaign with a defeat to Poland, securing qualification for the Round of 16 with six points.

Their 3-1 victory over Korea DPR was particularly significant, as Nigeria overcame the defending champions to finish the group stage on a positive note.

Venezuela, meanwhile, advanced as one of the four best third-placed teams after collecting three points in Group D.

The South Americans recorded a 3-2 victory over Zambia but lost to France and Japan during the group stage before facing Germany in the knockout round.

A potential meeting with Venezuela would give Nigeria another demanding test as they pursue a place in the semi-finals and seek to extend their campaign in Morocco.

For the Flamingos, however, attention must first remain on Mexico, with qualification for the quarter-finals dependent on Thursday’s result.

The 2026 tournament is being staged in Morocco and features 24 teams competing for the world title. The quarter-finals are scheduled to begin on November 1.
