Super Eagles boost as Brighton’s Femi Azeez returns to training ahead of Chelle’s squad announcement

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has received a timely boost ahead of the announcement of his Super Eagles squad, with Brighton & Hove Albion winger Femi Azeez set to return to full training after recovering from a minor hamstring problem.

Azeez joined Brighton from Championship side Millwall on transfer deadline day following an impressive 2025/26 campaign, but his anticipated start with the Premier League club was delayed by the injury.

However, Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler provided an encouraging update on Thursday ahead of the club’s Premier League trip to Coventry City.

According to Hurzeler, the Nigerian winger was scheduled to train fully with the first-team squad and could be considered for weekend action if he suffers no setback.

“He will definitely train today with the squad and hopefully everything is fine and then he hopefully is an option for the weekend,” Hurzeler told reporters.

The development could be particularly significant for Chelle, who is preparing his plans for Nigeria’s forthcoming international engagements.

The Super Eagles are expected to face Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, while Nigeria also has an international friendly against Russia later this month.

Azeez’s return to training therefore comes at an important moment as Chelle weighs his options for the upcoming fixtures.

The 24-year-old winger made a strong impression during his final campaign at Millwall before securing his move to Brighton, earning the opportunity to test himself in the Premier League.

His ability to operate in the wide areas could provide Chelle with another attacking option if he returns to competitive action and maintains his fitness.

For now, Azeez’s immediate priority will be to complete training without any recurrence of the hamstring problem and push for involvement with Brighton.

A successful return could strengthen his chances of attracting attention from the Super Eagles coaching staff as Nigeria prepares for a busy international schedule.

The latest development will therefore be welcomed by Chelle, particularly with the Super Eagles squad announcement approaching.
