Super Eagles line up Jordan friendly in March amid World Cup qualification uncertainty

Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles, will step onto unfamiliar ground next month with more than pride at stake when they face Jordan in an international friendly scheduled to hold in Amman between March 23 and 31, 2026.

For Jordan, the fixture forms part of their historic preparations for their maiden appearance at the FIFA World Cup 2026, where they are drawn against tough opposition including an African representative in Algeria.

The Middle Eastern side see the encounter with Nigeria as a valuable test against African opposition as they fine tune strategies ahead of the global tournament.

Nigeria, however, approach the friendly from a different standpoint. Following their painful playoff elimination, head coach Eric Chelle is expected to use the match as an opportunity to rebuild, integrate emerging talents, and reshape the squad’s future.

The Super Eagles’ absence from the World Cup was confirmed after a dramatic shootout defeat to the Leopards of Congo DR during the African qualifying playoffs.

Despite that setback, a glimmer of hope remains alive. The Nigeria Football Federation has formally petitioned FIFA over allegations that Congo DR fielded ineligible players during the decisive fixtures.

A ruling on the case is expected on February 16, 2026, and could dramatically alter Nigeria’s fortunes.

Should FIFA rule in Nigeria’s favour, the three time African champions could be handed a lifeline through the inter confederation playoffs scheduled to take place in Mexico next month.

Until then, the friendly in Amman may serve as both a rebuilding exercise and a crucial stepping stone, as the Super Eagles balance preparation with anticipation over a decision that could redefine their World Cup destiny.
