Security alert forces closure of Moshood Abiola National Stadium
The management of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, has ordered the immediate closure of the facility following a credible security alert received from the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters.
In a security notice released, the stadium management announced that all gates to the nation's premier sports complex were shut with immediate effect from August 3, 2026. The closure will remain in force until further directives are issued by the Police Headquarters.
The development affects everyone who uses the stadium, including athletes, football clubs, fitness enthusiasts, joggers, and members of the public who regularly visit the facility for sporting and recreational activities.
According to the statement, no individual will be allowed into the stadium during the period of the restriction. Those already inside the complex were instructed to leave immediately in a calm and orderly manner to ensure their safety.
Security personnel have since been stationed around the stadium to enforce the directive and maintain law and order.
The public has also been advised to stay away from the stadium gates and cooperate fully with security agencies.
Although officials confirmed that the decision followed a credible security threat, they did not disclose the nature of the alert, describing the measure as a precaution aimed at safeguarding lives and property while security agencies evaluate the situation.
The stadium management assured users that updates on the security situation and the eventual reopening of the facility would be communicated through official channels once clearance is received from the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters.
The Moshood Abiola National Stadium serves as one of Nigeria's foremost sporting venues, hosting major national competitions, football matches, training sessions, and daily fitness activities. The temporary closure is expected to disrupt scheduled sporting events and training programmes until normal operations resume.
