President Bola Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria on Tuesday, September 29, ending his extended working vacation in Europe.

The President will arrive in Lagos, where he is expected to observe Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1 and deliver a national broadcast before returning to Abuja next weekend.

Presidency sources said Tinubu is expected to be received at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

His Lagos itinerary includes official engagements ahead of the October 1 anniversary, with a public lecture scheduled for September 30. It will be the second consecutive year Tinubu will celebrate Independence Day in Lagos.

Tinubu began his vacation on August 30, initially announcing a three-week break in London before travelling to Paris, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré.

The Presidency later extended his stay, with the latest schedule putting his return on September 29.

Despite his absence from the country, Tinubu has continued to receive briefings and issue directives on national matters, including ordering an investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in NSCDC custody in Minna, Niger State. The Federal Government subsequently constituted a 10-member investigative committee and suspended several NSCDC officers pending the outcome of the inquiry.

During the President’s absence, Vice President Kashim Shettima represented him at key engagements, including Nigeria’s participation in the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. With Shettima also out of the country, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has represented the President at selected official functions.

Tinubu’s return comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with APC leaders continuing consultations and mobilisation across the country.

Attention will now turn to the President’s Independence Day address, his Lagos engagements and the resumption of presidential activities in Abuja next weekend.
