Nigeria’s Flamingos are awaiting confirmation of their Round of 16 opponents at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, with Mexico, Chile and Australia competing for second place in Group F.
The Nigerian team secured qualification for the knockout stage after finishing second in Group B with six points from three matches, capped by an impressive 3-1 victory over defending champions North Korea.
Head coach Hakeem Busari’s side will face the runners-up in Group F on Thursday, October 29, with the outcome of the remaining group fixtures determining Nigeria’s next opponents.
Mexico moved into second place in Group F after recovering from an early setback to defeat Chile 3-1, keeping their qualification hopes alive ahead of the final round of matches.
Spain have already secured qualification from the group, leaving Mexico, Chile and Australia to battle for the remaining knockout-stage position.
Chile and Australia entered the decisive round with one point each, while Mexico’s victory over Chile gave them an advantage in the contest for second place.
Chile are scheduled to face Spain, while Mexico take on Australia in fixtures expected to settle the final Group F standings.
The results will determine which team advances to meet Nigeria, leaving the Flamingos’ technical crew to monitor the situation while continuing preparations for the knockout stage.
Regardless of their opponents, Nigeria will face a different challenge in the Round of 16, where a defeat would end their campaign.
The Flamingos will draw confidence from their performance against North Korea, when they scored three times to defeat the reigning champions 3-1 and secure their place in the next round.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Oluebube Umejiaku doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 38th minute. Kanyinsola Yusuf added a third goal early in the second half as the Nigerian youngsters produced a memorable performance.
The victory helped Nigeria recover from their earlier defeat to Poland and finish second behind North Korea in Group B.
With their group-stage campaign completed, the Flamingos can now focus on tactical preparation, recovery and scouting as they await the identity of their next opponents.
The Round of 16 encounter in Salé will represent another important test for Busari’s team as they seek to progress deeper into the competition and sustain Nigeria’s challenge for the title.
For now, Mexico, Chile and Australia remain central to Nigeria’s immediate World Cup calculations, with their final Group F results set to determine the Flamingos’ next assignment.
