WTT Contender Lagos 2026 Set for Global Showdown as World-Class Stars Converge on Lagos
Lagos is set to once again become the centre of global table tennis as top players from across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas converge for the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos, scheduled to take place from May 19 to 24 at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Regarded as one of the most vibrant and energetic stops on the World Table Tennis (WTT) calendar, the Lagos tournament remains one of only 10 events officially listed in the 2026 WTT Contender Series, underlining its growing prestige within the global table tennis circuit.
Leading table tennis nations including Japan, South Korea, Germany, and France are expected to headline the competition, alongside players from Denmark, the United States, India, Portugal, Romania, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Belgium, Canada, Togo, the Netherlands, Ghana, Wales, Egypt, Italy, Chile, Slovenia, and host nation Nigeria.
Competitors will battle for a share of the tournament’s $100,000 prize purse, with the Lagos event continuing to attract elite and emerging talents drawn by its competitive atmosphere, passionate fans, and renowned hospitality.
Danish star Anders Lind is among the notable names expected at the tournament, which will also feature the return of former champions and highly rated international players.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Adesoji Tayo, described the competition as a major platform for showcasing elite table tennis in Africa while strengthening Nigeria’s reputation as a growing force in international sports hosting.
“We are excited to host this prestigious event, one that not only highlights elite table tennis in Africa and beyond but also underscores Nigeria’s growing influence on the global sporting stage,” Tayo said.
He noted that the tournament comes on the heels of the centenary anniversary of table tennis in London and expressed confidence in Lagos’ readiness to deliver another memorable edition.
“Nigeria’s commercial hub is prepared to deliver an unforgettable experience filled with energy, culture, and top-tier table tennis. As one of the most popular tournaments on the WTT calendar, the Contender Lagos continues to raise the bar in organisation and hospitality,” he added.
The WTT Contender Series serves as a bridge between grassroots development and elite tournaments such as the WTT Champions, while also offering players the opportunity to earn valuable International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) ranking points.
Events scheduled for the Lagos tournament include men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, as well as mixed doubles competitions, with fans expected to witness high-quality action throughout the six-day championship.
