2025 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup: Flamingos set for fiery opener against Canada
Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will kick off their 2025 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup campaign on Sunday against Canada at the Football Academy Mohammed VI (Pitch 2) in Salé, Morocco.
This marks the second-ever meeting between the two nations at this level. The first ended in a 1–1 draw, but thirteen years later, both sides return stronger, sharper, and with higher stakes on the line.
Led by head coach Bankole Olowookere, the Flamingos head into the tournament, brimming with confidence after an intense preparation phase. They recorded double-digit victories in their tune-up matches, demonstrating a fearless attacking style built around high pressing, fluid movement, and creativity in the final third.
Their 3–2 win over Paraguay in a thrilling pre-tournament friendly following a narrow defeat to New Zealand showcased the team’s fighting spirit, tactical flexibility, and ability to respond under pressure.
Sunday’s opener, however, presents a stern test. Canada are renowned for their tactical discipline, physical strength, and compact defensive setup attributes that have made them difficult opponents for African teams in youth tournaments. For Nigeria, maintaining composure, discipline, and efficiency in front of goal will be crucial.
The Flamingos’ ambitions this year go beyond just progressing from the group stage. After finishing third in India in 2022 and reaching the quarterfinals in the Dominican Republic edition, the team is determined to take another leap forward. A strong start against Canada would not only boost their confidence but also send a clear message of intent to the rest of Group D, which also features France and Samoa.
