Godson Brume sentenced to 27 months in U.S prison over firearm offence
Nigerian sprinter and former LSU track star Godson Brume has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison after being convicted of illegally possessing a firearm while in the United States on an F-1 student visa. Following his prison term, Brume could also face deportation or removal from the country.
The 23-year-old was sentenced in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, over an incident that occurred on February 7, 2025.
According to court documents, Brume—whose full name is Oghenebrume Brume—was arrested after allegedly firing a Glock 43X 9mm pistol multiple times during a domestic dispute at his apartment complex.
The complaint stated that Brume was inside his apartment with another young woman when his former girlfriend, who is also the mother of his infant child, arrived with the baby. Brume went outside, where an argument broke out between the pair. During the confrontation, and while the child was present, he allegedly discharged the firearm.
Authorities said Brume later returned to his apartment. A short time afterward, his ex-girlfriend entered the apartment and saw him with the other woman, leading to another argument. The dispute continued outside the apartment, where Brume allegedly fired the weapon several more times as the woman fled the scene.
Investigators reported finding multiple bullet impacts in the walls of the apartment complex. No injuries were reported.
Brume enjoyed a successful collegiate athletics career, winning the 2024 SEC men's 100m title and recording a personal best of 9.90 seconds in the event.
