2027 Election: Kwankwaso Set to Emerge Peter Obi’s Running Mate - Kwankwasiyya
The Kwankwasiyya Movement has disclosed that its leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is set to run as the vice-presidential candidate to Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.
According to the group, the proposed joint ticket will be fielded under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), as Kwankwaso prepares to formally join the party following his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The development was confirmed by the movement’s spokesperson, Habibu Sale Mohammed, during an interview over the weekend. He noted that the decision followed a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held in Kano on Friday, attended by representatives of the NDC and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
Mohammed explained that ongoing legal challenges within the ADC influenced the decision to defect, especially with the deadline for submission of party membership registers to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) drawing near.
“With limited time left, stakeholders agreed that the ADC may not withstand the legal pressures it is currently facing. That informed the decision to move,” he said.
He further revealed that several prominent figures within the Kwankwasiyya fold have already exited the ADC, including Yusuf Gawuna and Aminu Gwarzo, noting that loyalists are expected to align with Kwankwaso’s next political move.
In addition, the movement hinted at ongoing coalition talks aimed at strengthening the NDC ahead of 2027. Among those reportedly being courted are Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, both key figures in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Mohammed stated that the strategic alignment is designed to navigate potential legal constraints and ensure broader electoral participation.
“The goal is to prevent any legal complications that could hinder the candidacies of Obi and Kwankwaso, while also giving Nigerians credible alternatives in 2027,” he added.
He emphasized that Kwankwaso remains open to negotiations and alliances that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, describing the move as part of a broader effort to facilitate a change in leadership at the federal level.
