Atiku Abubakar joins African Democratic Congress ahead of 2027 Elections
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a major political realignment ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Atiku made the announcement on Monday via his X (formerly Twitter) account, where he posted a photo displaying his ADC membership card with the caption: “It’s official. – AA.”
His move comes months after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July, ending years of association with the party under which he had previously contested for the presidency. Atiku’s exit followed prolonged internal crises within the PDP and what he described as a departure from the party’s founding values.
In his resignation letter dated July 16 and addressed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and a shift away from the PDP’s core principles as reasons for his departure.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” he wrote, expressing gratitude for the support he enjoyed during his time in the party. He also conveyed his best wishes to the PDP in its future endeavors.
Atiku’s membership in the ADC further strengthens the party’s profile after it was adopted earlier this year as a unified platform by several opposition blocs preparing for the 2027 elections. His entry is expected to significantly reshape the political landscape as parties position themselves for what promises to be a highly competitive race.
