Melaye Raises Alarm Over Nigeria’s Situation, Says Nation Has Never Faced Such Crisis Since 1999
Former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has expressed concern over the prevailing political and security tensions in Nigeria, describing them as unprecedented since the country’s return to democracy in 1999.
In a post shared on social media on Thursday, Melaye warned that the nation must not be allowed to “die,” citing recent controversies including rumours of a military coup, threats by former U.S. President Donald Trump to invade Nigeria, and what he described as “arbitrary and egocentric” amendments to national laws.
According to the former lawmaker, the current situation reflects a dangerous decline in governance and respect for democratic principles.
He wrote, “Nigeria must not die. The things happening in this country have never happened since 1999. Rumour of coup; Trump and America’s threat of invasion, and arbitrary and egocentric amendment of extant laws. Enough is enough. In an unjust society, silence is a crime.”
Melaye’s remarks come amid growing tension following reports that Trump, in a recent statement, redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious persecution. The move has drawn mixed reactions from international observers, diplomats, and citizens.
Trump also reportedly warned that the U.S. military could intervene against terrorist strongholds in Nigeria if the government fails to end ongoing violence and mass killings, particularly those targeting Christian communities.
