Brahim Diaz and Yassine Bounou shine as Morocco fall short of AFCON 2025 title
Morocco’s dream of lifting the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil may have ended in heartbreak, but the individual brilliance of Brahim Díaz and Yassine Bounou ensured the Atlas Lions still walked away from AFCON 2025 with major honours and lasting pride.
Díaz emerged as the tournament’s top scorer, claiming the Golden Boot with five goals in a spectacular debut AFCON campaign that announced him firmly on the continental stage. The 26-year-old Real Madrid forward etched his name into Moroccan football history by becoming the first player from the country to score in five consecutive AFCON matches, finding the net in every outing from the group stage through to the quarterfinals.
He opened his account in Morocco’s 2–0 victory over Comoros and maintained his scoring rhythm against Mali, Zambia, Tanzania and Cameroon. Each goal propelled the hosts deeper into the competition, with Díaz’s sharp movement, intelligence and composure in front of goal proving central to Morocco’s march to the semifinals, where they edged Nigeria’s Super Eagles to book a place in the final.
Yet football’s fine margins delivered a cruel twist. In the dying moments of normal time in the final against Senegal, Morocco were awarded a penalty, a moment that could have crowned Díaz a national hero. Instead, his attempted panenka was comfortably saved by Edouard Mendy. Senegal would go on to snatch victory in extra time, leaving Díaz and the Rabat crowd stunned.
Despite the painful ending, Díaz’s numbers stood unmatched. Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Egypt captain Mohamed Salah finished joint second on four goals apiece, while a cluster of players, including Ademola Lookman, Amad Diallo, Youssef El Kaabi, Riyad Mahrez, Lassine Sinayoko and Senegal’s title-winning scorer Pape Gueye, ended the tournament with three goals.
If Díaz’s Golden Boot told a story of attacking excellence, Yassine Bounou’s Golden Glove reflected Morocco’s defensive steel. The reigning CAF Goalkeeper of the Year was named Best Goalkeeper of AFCON 2025 after another commanding campaign between the posts.
Bounou kept five clean sheets in seven matches, the joint-highest tally alongside Senegal’s Mendy, anchoring a disciplined Moroccan backline that conceded just two goals on their impressive run to the final. His tournament was punctuated by decisive moments: razor-sharp reflex saves in knockout matches, authoritative command of his area, and calm leadership that consistently settled his defence under pressure.
From the group stages to a commanding semi-final display, Bounou repeatedly tilted tight contests in Morocco’s favour, underlining his reputation as one of Africa’s most reliable shot-stoppers. Even in defeat against Senegal, his influence across the competition remained unmistakable.
While the final will linger painfully in Moroccan memory, AFCON 2025 ultimately showcased two pillars of the Atlas Lions’ future, Díaz’s ruthless finishing and Bounou’s unshakable presence. One leaves with golden goals, the other with golden gloves, both carrying the promise that Morocco’s continental breakthrough may only be a matter of time.
