Chioma Okafor signs for North Carolina Courage
Chioma Okafor has officially begun her professional journey, signing a three-year deal with the North Carolina Courage in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). The contract also includes a club option for the 2029 season, signalling long-term confidence in the rising Nigerian star.
Okafor’s move comes on the heels of a standout collegiate career with the UConn Huskies, where she cemented her place as one of the programme’s most dangerous attacking threats. Over four impressive seasons, she made 57 appearances, scoring 30 goals and providing five assists.
Her time in Connecticut was defined by excellence and consistency. The 2024 WAFCON winner earned First Team All-BIG EAST honours in each of her last three seasons and was named an All-American three times. She also finished as a 2024 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist and featured on the 2025 preseason watchlist, further establishing her as one of the top forwards in NCAA football.
North Carolina Courage’s Chief Soccer Officer, Ceri Bowley, hailed Okafor as a “powerful and fearless attacker” whose speed and direct approach will elevate the team’s frontline. He also highlighted her competitive edge and hunger for growth, noting that she aligns perfectly with the culture the club is shaping.
Okafor, thrilled about the next chapter, said:
“I’m excited to call North Carolina home and sign with the Courage. From the early conversations with the team, I fell in love with the developmental plan they laid out for me and the drive to build back this club’s championship roots. I can’t wait to get to work in 2026.”
