D'Tigress join 24 team race for 2026 FIBA World Cup spot

Africa’s queens of the court, D’Tigress, will be back in action next March as they gear up for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 qualifying tournaments.

The Nigerian team, fresh from their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, are one of 24 national teams listed to compete for a spot in the World Cup set to take place in Germany.

Their place was confirmed over the weekend following the conclusion of all women’s continental tournaments. Mali, Senegal, and South Sudan, who reached the semifinals alongside Nigeria at the AfroBasket in Abidjan, will also represent Africa.

Other teams locked in for the qualifiers include some familiar powerhouses. USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Puerto Rico are in the mix after finishing in the top six at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2025.

From Asia and Oceania, it’s Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, and the Philippines, who sealed their tickets through the Asia Cup 2025.

Even though Germany are already through as tournament hosts, they’ll still take part in the qualifiers. They’ll be joined by Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, and Turkey from Europe, along with Czech Republic and Hungary, who booked their places after winning pre-qualifiers held last August in Kigali and Mexico City.

According to FIBA, with Germany and the five continental champions already guaranteed World Cup spots, only 11 tickets are still up for grabs.

Those remaining spots will be decided in four global qualifying tournaments set for March 11–17, 2026. Each tournament will feature six teams, and when the dust settles, 16 nations, including the hosts and continental champions, will head to Berlin for the main event.
