Sunshine Queens sack Kayode Olujohungbe amid NWFL Premiership struggles
Sunshine Queens have parted ways with head coach Kayode Olujohungbe after a disappointing run of form in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership.
The decision follows a narrow 1–0 defeat to Ahudiyannem Queens in their rescheduled Matchday 13 fixture at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure. It was the Akure-based side’s fifth loss of the season, leaving them ninth in Group B with just 12 points from 13 matches.
Olujohungbe’s exit comes on the back of a worrying dip in results. Since their last victory a Matchday 8 win over Nasarawa Amazons, Sunshine Queens have struggled for consistency. Losses to FC Robo and Dannaz in Lagos, alongside a goalless draw at home against Delta Queens, highlighted a team in decline, with the latest setback ultimately sealing the coach’s fate.
In response, the club has appointed Tayo Onilude as head coach with immediate effect. He inherits a side under pressure, with crucial fixtures ahead against Abia Angels, Remo Stars Ladies, and a resurgent Nasarawa Amazons, as Sunshine Queens battle to steer clear of relegation.
For Ahudiyannem Queens, however, the momentum continues to build. Since the arrival of head coach Adanna Nwaneri, the team remains unbeaten in four matches. Uduakobang Monday Peter’s 37th-minute strike proved decisive in Akure, sealing their third win in that run remarkably, all three coming away from home.
The fixture itself had its own drama, initially halted after just seven minutes on Thursday due to heavy rainfall before being concluded the following day.
The win lifts Ahudiyannem Queens to sixth in the standings, just one point behind Delta Queens, as their late-season surge gathers pace.
