President Bola Tinubu honours D'Tigress after historic Afrobasket triumph
Fresh off their record-breaking triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, Nigeria’s D’Tigress received a hero’s welcome on Monday as President Bola Tinubu rolled out a massive reward package to celebrate the team’s success.
Each player will take home $100,000 and one plot each for the whole team, while every member of the coaching and technical crew will receive $50,000. The President also conferred on them one of the nation’s highest honours, Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), recognizing their outstanding contribution to Nigerian sports.
Vice President Kashim Shettima made the announcement during a special reception held in their honour at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja.
D’Tigress had etched their names in the history books just a day earlier, defeating Mali 78–64 in Abidjan to win their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, the first team in tournament history to do so. The victory also ended Senegal’s long-standing record of four straight titles set between 1974 and 1981.
They didn’t just win. They dominated. The victory extended Nigeria’s unbeaten streak in the competition to 29 games, a run that has spanned ten years. It also earned them an automatic ticket to the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup.
The team, accompanied by officials, arrived at the Presidential Villa at exactly, where they were warmly received by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima. Vice President Shettima officially received them on behalf of President Tinubu.
It was a double celebration for team captain Amy Okonkwo, who was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament, for the second edition in a row.
Monday’s celebration mirrored the reception President Tinubu held just a week earlier for the Super Falcons, after they secured their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Rabat, Morocco.
