Diaspora Stars return as national boxing signals fresh dawn
The build up to the 2026 Commonwealth Games qualifiers has taken on renewed intensity as the Nigeria Boxing Federation confirmed the arrival of several foreign based Nigerian fighters for the maiden National Boxing Week in Lagos.
Their decision to compete at home underscores growing belief in a revamped, merit driven selection process designed to produce a formidable Team Nigeria for Glasgow.
Scheduled for March 1–6, 2026, at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Complex inside the National Stadium, Lagos, the event will stage the National Open Trials to determine Nigeria’s representatives for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The initiative aligns with reform measures introduced by the National Sports Commission, aimed at restoring integrity, fairness and competitiveness across national sports federations.
With both home based and diaspora boxers vying for slots across ten weight categories in the men’s and women’s divisions, the trials promise high level, no-favoritism contests.
Vice President of the Federation, Omonlei Imadu, described the influx of overseas based athletes as a defining moment for the sport.
According to him, the willingness of diaspora fighters to return and subject themselves to open trials reflects confidence in a transparent system where selection will be strictly performance based.
Clubs, state associations, institutions and eligible Nigerian boxers worldwide are expected to present one athlete per weight class, ensuring nationwide inclusion.
Beyond competition, National Boxing Week is positioned as a reform-driven festival of development. Activities will include technical seminars for referees and coaches, athlete orientation sessions on discipline and professionalism, and stakeholder engagements to strengthen the domestic boxing structure.
The Federation will also roll out an automated licensing system and upgraded digital governance tools to enhance transparency and efficiency, while honoring the enduring legacy of Nigerian boxing icon Hogan Kid Bassey, whose global exploits continue to inspire the next generation.
