Former Nigeria U-17 captain completes move to Europa-bound Portuguese side Torreense

Former Nigeria U-17 captain Shakirat Moshood has completed her transfer to Portuguese club SCU Torreense, signing a two-year contract after arriving in Portugal to finalise the move.

The talented full-back was officially unveiled by the Portuguese side on Wednesday, marking the beginning of her European journey following an outstanding campaign with Bayelsa Queens in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership.

Moshood earned widespread acclaim with her consistent performances for Bayelsa Queens, where her pace, defensive solidity and attacking quality established her as one of the league’s brightest young prospects. Her impressive displays attracted interest from Europe before Torreense secured her signature.

The 18-year-old first announced herself on the global stage at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, where she scored four goals to finish as the tournament’s third-highest goalscorer, helping the Flamingos reach the quarter-finals. Her outstanding performances earned her widespread recognition as one of the competition’s breakout stars.

Her remarkable rise continued in 2025 when she finished runner-up for the CAF Women’s Youth Player of the Year Award, following another impressive campaign in which she captained the Flamingos to the quarter-finals of the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The move comes at a significant stage of Moshood’s career, with Torreense preparing for a campaign that includes participation in the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup, offering the Nigerian youngster an opportunity to compete on the European stage.

Her development has also been rewarded at international level as Moshood has been named in Nigeria’s 28-player provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, having starred throughout the Falconets’ qualification campaign under head coach Moses Aduku.

Having successfully progressed through Nigeria’s youth national teams, Moshood now stands on the verge of another FIFA World Cup appearance while embarking on her first professional adventure in Europe.

Her transfer further underlines the growing reputation of the Nigeria Women Football League as a pathway to elite football, with another promising Nigerian talent earning a move abroad through consistent performances at both club and international levels.

Moshood’s switch to Torreense represents another significant milestone for Nigerian women’s football as the country’s emerging stars continue to secure opportunities with leading European clubs while enhancing Nigeria’s growing influence on the global stage.
