Fury, Anthony Joshua set for blockbuster December clash as Warren reveals record purses

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are set to earn the biggest purses of their careers when they finally meet in a highly anticipated heavyweight showdown on Friday, December 11, at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

Promoter Frank Warren revealed that the financial rewards attached to the long-awaited bout were a major factor in ensuring the fight finally came together after years of failed negotiations and setbacks.

The fight, backed by Netflix and Saudi financier Turki Alalshikh, has faced several obstacles, including disagreements over the venue and the proposed involvement of UFC president Dana White.

Warren, who has promoted Fury for several years, told SunSport that the financial package involved was too significant for the bout to fall apart again.

He described the purses as potentially the biggest ever earned by British fighters, saying both Fury and Joshua would receive “huge purses” for the December encounter.

Netflix had initially pushed for the fight to take place at Madison Square Garden in New York, with White involved in the proposed arrangement. However, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, reportedly insisted on a UK venue, citing a legally binding agreement requiring the bout to be staged in Britain without White’s involvement.

Warren subsequently helped secure the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, which has a capacity of around 70,000. A late ring-walk time, reportedly between 1am and 2am, is also being discussed to accommodate a prime-time television audience in the United States.

Warren said the global nature of modern boxing made such scheduling considerations necessary, particularly given the financial investment behind the event.

While preparations continue for the blockbuster contest, Fury has also enrolled in drug testing ahead of his meeting with Joshua.

Warren, who has long backed Fury, remains confident in his fighter’s chances and believes the former heavyweight champion can secure a knockout victory.

“Styles make fights,” Warren said, adding that he believes Fury has aged better than Joshua and possesses the durability and finishing ability required to prevail.

The Fury-Joshua bout is part of a busy final quarter for boxing, with several major fights scheduled before the heavyweight rivals finally share the ring.

Ben Whittaker is due to face Conor Wallace on October 3, while Daniel Dubois is scheduled to meet Fabio Wardley in a rematch on October 17. Canelo Alvarez is also set to face Christian Mbili on October 31.

All roads will then lead to Cardiff on December 11, when Fury and Joshua are expected to settle their long-running rivalry in one of the most anticipated British heavyweight fights in recent years.
