Kingsley James Awodi elected Para Powerlifting Federation President
Philanthropist and sports enthusiast Kingsley James Awodi has been elected President of the Para Powerlifting Federation of Nigeria (PPFN), marking the beginning of what stakeholders believe will be a new chapter for one of the country's most successful para sports.
The election, held at the VIP Lounge of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, attracted delegates from across Nigeria, who unanimously endorsed Awodi to lead the federation for the next four years.
Awodi emerged unopposed after securing all 12 votes cast by members of the congress, a development widely seen as a testament to the confidence reposed in his leadership and long-standing commitment to the growth of para powerlifting. Over the years, he has earned recognition for providing financial, logistical, and moral support to Nigeria's para-athletes, both at home and on the international stage.
His hands-on involvement in the sport has extended beyond sponsorship. Awodi has consistently attended training camps, national trials, and major international competitions, offering direct support and motivation to athletes. That unwavering commitment made him the consensus choice to lead the federation into a new phase.
Joining him on the new executive committee is Mr. Patrick Akukeke, M.O.N, who was also elected unopposed as Vice President. The new leadership is expected to be inaugurated later today.
Speaking shortly after his election, Awodi expressed gratitude to the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for creating an enabling environment for sports federations to thrive.
"I want to appreciate the leadership of the NSC under Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade for giving us the enabling environment to thrive," he said.
Outlining his vision, the newly elected president pledged to run an administration anchored on inclusion, innovation, and accountability.
"We are coming on board to carry everybody along. Para powerlifting has brought Nigeria immense glory on the global stage, and it is time to build a system that will sustain that success. We will introduce innovative ideas and move beyond the old ways of doing things."
Awodi identified youth development and athlete welfare as major priorities of his administration, stressing the need to prepare the next generation of champions as many of Nigeria's celebrated para powerlifters approach the twilight of their careers.
"We are going to encourage young and upcoming athletes so we can gradually replace the aging athletes with fresh talent," he said. "We will establish more grassroots programmes, training centres, and competitions that will provide young lifters with a clear pathway to the national team."
Observers believe Awodi's entrepreneurial background and strong private-sector network could help attract increased investment and sponsorship for the federation, strengthening athlete development and improving funding opportunities.
With Nigeria's para powerlifting team remaining one of the most successful in Africa and a consistent force on the global stage, expectations are high that the new administration will consolidate on past achievements while positioning the country for even greater success in the next Olympic and Paralympic cycle.
Awodi's election signals a renewed commitment to athlete development, stronger institutional support, grassroots expansion, and sustainable growth as the Para Powerlifting Federation of Nigeria embarks on a new era of leadership.
