House Committee on Sports hails Super Falcons for early WAFCON quarterfinal berth

The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has applauded the Super Falcons for securing an early qualification to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Nigeria, nine-time champions of the competition, booked their place in the last eight after back-to-back wins in Group B — a 3-0 victory over Tunisia followed by a narrow 1-0 win against Botswana on Thursday in Casablanca.

Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadu, commended the team’s performance, describing it as a bold step toward reclaiming the continental title last won in 2018.

“The best team in Africa is gradually working its way back to the top,” Amadu said. “Winning the first two matches in convincing fashion shows the team’s seriousness, focus, and capacity to go all the way.”

The lawmaker, who represents Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency, reaffirmed the nation’s unified support for the Super Falcons, noting that the government and citizens alike are behind the team.

“The Federal Government, the Nigeria Football Federation, and over 180 million Nigerians are firmly behind this team,” he added. “We believe this squad has the quality and experience to go the distance and lift the trophy after seven years.”

Nigeria will face Algeria in their final group match on Sunday, July 13, at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium. With six points already secured, the Falcons are in pole position to finish top of Group B.

The quarterfinal fixtures are scheduled to be played on July 18 and 19, with Nigeria’s next opponent to be determined after the final round of group games.

Amadu concluded by praising the technical crew and depth of the current squad, expressing confidence in the team’s chances of restoring Nigeria’s dominance in women’s football on the continent.
