NIMC Warns NIN Portal Users: Same Device and Browser Required for Modifications
By Priscilla Ahmadu
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued new public guidelines for Nigerians seeking to modify their National Identification Number (NIN) data through its self-service portal, warning that accounts are tied to the specific device and browser used during registration.
In a statement on Thursday, August 7, 2025, NIMC said the measures were aimed at protecting users’ personal information and ensuring the integrity of the self-service modifications system.
“Your self-service account is uniquely tied to the browser and device used during registration. Access to your account is therefore limited to that specific browser on that particular device,” said Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of the Corporate Communications Unit at NIMC.
He explained that any attempt to log in using a different browser or device could lead to access issues. Clearing a browser’s cache, he added, can also reset the system and trigger a lockout, which would require an unlinking process to restore access.
The Commission further cautioned that once a browser and device are locked, users will have a maximum of five unlock attempts. “No further requests will be processed after this limit is exceeded,” Dr. Adegoke said.
According to NIMC, the restrictions are part of “measures put in place to safeguard and protect the identity of the users of the self-service modifications portal.”
The Commission urged all users to follow the guidelines closely to avoid unnecessary disruptions and delays. For assistance, users can contact the NIMC customer support team via nimccustomercare@nimc.gov.ng.
