NPFL hammer falls on Rangers, Nasarawa United over security breach
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has come down hard on Rangers International and Nasarawa United, issuing sanctions following incidents involving fans and club officials during recent league fixtures.
In separate rulings, the league body found both clubs guilty of breaching its Framework and Rules in matches played last Sunday, citing lapses in security and crowd control.
League leaders Rangers International were punished after their home clash against Barau FC at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, popularly known as the Cathedral in Enugu. According to the NPFL, the club failed to provide adequate and effective security, allowing unauthorised individuals access to restricted areas.
The league further noted misconduct from club officials, describing their actions as capable of bringing the game into disrepute. Rangers were also faulted for failing to properly manage their supporters, which resulted in the harassment of match officials.
As a consequence, the Enugu-based side has been fined ₦4 million and will play their remaining two home fixtures of the season behind closed doors.
Nasarawa United were handed a similar punishment following their April 5 encounter against Kun Khalifat FC at the Lafia City Stadium. The Solid Miners were also found culpable of inadequate security arrangements, which led to unauthorised access to sensitive areas within the stadium.
The Lafia club has been fined ₦3 million and, like Rangers, will play their final two home games of the campaign without fans.
Both clubs have been given a 48-hour window from the date of notification to file an appeal against the sanctions.
