NPFL sanction and fine land on Warri Wolves for referee assault

Warri Wolves have been sanctioned by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for breaching the league’s Framework and Rules during their match against Kano Pillars on Sunday.

The club was charged with failing to provide adequate and effective security, which allowed unauthorised persons to gain access to restricted areas during the encounter.

According to the NPFL, a Warri Wolves supporter assaulted the appointed match officials after the game, leaving the second assistant referee with an injured nose and bleeding.

The league imposed a ₦2 million fine on Warri Wolves for failing to provide adequate and effective security, with an additional ₦2 million penalty for the assault on the match official.

The club was also ordered to pay ₦250,000 as compensation to the affected assistant referee to cover the cost of treatment for the injury sustained during the incident.

In addition to the financial sanctions, the NPFL ordered that three points and three goals be deducted from Warri Wolves’ accrued points for assaulting and injuring the assistant referee.

The club will also play its next three home matches behind closed doors as part of the disciplinary measures.

Furthermore, the NPFL has directed Warri Wolves to identify and produce the individual responsible for the assault and provide evidence of the person’s prosecution within seven days.

The club has 48 hours from the date of the notice to appeal the sanctions.
