Nigeria's Nwankwo Chiamaka leads podium finish at African Youth Chess Championship
Nigeria recorded an impressive outing at the 2025 African Youth Chess Championship (AYCC) in Harare, Zimbabwe, headlined by a gold-medal performance from Nwankwo Michelle Chiamaka in the Under-12 Girls category.
The Landmark College student dominated her event, finishing unbeaten with 8.5 points from 9 games to emerge champion. Her triumph earned her the Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title and automatic qualification for the 2026 World Youth Chess Championship.
Nigeria’s success continued with Deborah Quickpen, who clinched the silver medal after finishing first runner-up overall, also securing the WFM title officially conferred by FIDE.
Completing Nigeria’s podium haul was Agusionu Zita, who finished on the podium in the Under-10 Girls category, earning the Woman Candidate Master (WCM) title.
