Nigeria vs Mexico: U17 Women’s World Cup Preview, Head-to-Head, Stars to Watch, Kick-Off and Probable Lineup

Nigeria’s Flamingos will battle Mexico on Thursday for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, hoping to build on their impressive victory over defending champions Korea DPR.

The Round of 16 encounter is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Nigerian time at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 2, in Salé, with both teams targeting a place among the tournament’s last eight.

Head coach Akeem Busari’s side enter the knockout contest with renewed confidence after defeating Korea DPR 3-1 in their final group match, ending the defending champions’ remarkable run without a regulation-time defeat at the competition.

Nigeria and Mexico both finished second in their respective groups with six points, setting up a contest between two sides that recovered from opening defeats to win their next two matches.

How the Flamingos Reached the Round of 16

Nigeria opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland before responding with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring against Puerto Rico, while Precious Oscar added a late second to secure Nigeria’s first win of the tournament.

The Flamingos then produced one of their strongest performances against two-time defending champions Korea DPR, winning 3-1 to seal qualification for the knockout stage.

Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Oluebube Umejiaku doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 38th minute. Kanyinsola Rodiat Yusuf extended the advantage with a superb free-kick in the 56th minute, while Korea DPR scored a late penalty.

The victory gave Nigeria six points from three matches, with six goals scored and four conceded in Group B.

Mexico’s Route to the Knockout Stage

Mexico also had to recover from an opening setback, losing 2-0 to Spain in their first Group F fixture.

They responded with a 3-1 victory over Chile, coming from behind after Catalina Muñoz gave the South Americans an early lead. Mia Urbano, Citlalli Reyes and Nicole Jimenez scored as Mexico completed the comeback.

Mexico secured their place in the Round of 16 with a narrow 1-0 win over Australia. Reyes scored the decisive goal in the 35th minute, helping her side finish second in Group F with six points.

The Mexicans scored four goals and conceded three during the group stage, setting up a potentially close encounter with Nigeria.

Nigeria vs Mexico: Head-to-Head Record

Nigeria have a positive historical reference ahead of Thursday’s meeting, having defeated Mexico 3-0 during the group stage of the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.

Rasheedat Ajibade opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Uchenna Kanu added a second four minutes later, and Aminat Yakubu completed the victory in the 58th minute.

However, the 2014 result involved different generations of players and offers no guarantee of a repeat. The upcoming encounter will be decided by the teams’ performances on the day, with a quarter-final place at stake.

Players to Watch

Nigeria: Oluwakemi Adegbuyi

Adegbuyi has emerged as one of Nigeria’s key attacking threats in Morocco. She scored against Puerto Rico and opened the scoring against Korea DPR, demonstrating her ability to deliver in important moments.

Her movement and finishing could prove crucial against a Mexico side that has conceded three goals in the group stage.

Nigeria: Oluebube Umejiaku

Umejiaku has contributed goals and assists during the tournament. She scored against Poland and Korea DPR and provided the assist for Oscar’s goal against Puerto Rico.

Her ability to combine with Nigeria’s other forwards could create problems for Mexico’s defence.

Nigeria: Kanyinsola Rodiat Yusuf

Yusuf’s set-piece quality was on display against Korea DPR, when her free-kick extended Nigeria’s lead. She also assisted Umejiaku’s goal against Poland.

Her contribution from wider positions could give the Flamingos another route to goal.

Mexico: Citlalli Reyes

Mexico captain Reyes will be one of the players Nigeria must monitor closely. She scored against Chile and Australia, including the decisive goal that secured Mexico’s qualification for the Round of 16.

Her experience at the tournament and ability to influence key moments make her a major threat to Nigeria’s defensive organisation.

Mexico: Mia Urbano

Urbano scored Mexico’s equaliser against Chile and helped spark her team’s comeback in that match. Nigeria’s defenders will need to remain alert to her movement and ability to exploit openings in the final third.

Tactical Preview: What Could Decide the Match?

Nigeria will be encouraged by the attacking quality they showed against Korea DPR, but reproducing that performance against Mexico will require concentration and efficiency.

The Flamingos will need to balance their attacking ambition with defensive discipline, particularly when Mexico transition quickly from defence to attack.

Reyes’ influence will be a key concern for Nigeria. Restricting her space and limiting the service she receives around the penalty area could help the Flamingos disrupt Mexico’s attacking rhythm.

At the other end, Adegbuyi and Umejiaku will be central to Nigeria’s hopes of converting chances. Yusuf’s ability to deliver from set pieces could also prove important in a tightly contested knockout match.

Mexico have demonstrated resilience by winning their final two group matches, so Nigeria cannot afford to rely solely on the momentum from their victory over the defending champions.

Predicted Nigeria Starting XI

Nigeria’s official line-up has not yet been announced. Based on the team’s recent selection and performances, the Flamingos could start with the following players:

Predicted XI (4-3-3):

Jane Ijirigho; Azeezat Oduntan, Esther Stephen, Ohunene Sunday, Kanyinsola Rodiat Yusuf; Favour Nkwocha, Mary Dunstan, Tosin Rafiu; Queen Joseph, Oluebube Umejiaku, Oluwakemi Adegbuyi.

Can Nigeria Reach the Quarter-Finals?

Thursday’s fixture presents Nigeria with an opportunity to move closer to their ambition of winning the tournament. The Flamingos claimed bronze at the 2022 edition in India and will hope to make another deep run in Morocco.

Mexico, however, will arrive with confidence after consecutive victories and possess attacking players capable of punishing defensive mistakes.

For Nigeria, the route to victory lies in maintaining the intensity displayed against Korea DPR, remaining organised without the ball and taking their opportunities in front of goal.

The Flamingos have already demonstrated their ability to compete against the best teams at this level. Now they must deliver another disciplined performance to secure a quarter-final place.

The question is whether Nigeria can repeat their 3-0 victory over Mexico from 2014 or whether a new generation of Mexican players will rewrite the story.
