Nigeria women's weightlifters dominate opening days of 2026 African Senior Championship in Egypt
Nigeria’s women weightlifters have made a spectacular start at the 2026 Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship and 16th Mediterranean Cup in Ismaila, Egypt.
Ruth Nyong Asuquo (48kg), Onome Omolola Didih (53kg), and Rafiat Afolashade Lawal (58kg) each claimed three gold medals in their respective categories, propelling Nigeria to the top of the medal table after just two days, with a total of nine golds.
The standout performances not only earned podium finishes but also boosted Nigeria’s campaign for qualification at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, as the championship serves as an official qualifying event.
Remarkably, Nigeria’s success comes from a squad of just 10 athletes, highlighting both the depth of talent and the increasing consistency of the nation’s women weightlifters on the international stage.
