Rabat awaits a classic as host Morocco face Senegal in AFCON 2025 final showdown

Under the floodlights of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday night, Africa’s biggest football prize will find a new home as hosts Morocco lock horns with Senegal in the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 final. Kick-off is set for 8pm local time, with a capacity crowd expected to create a carnival atmosphere in the Moroccan capital.

It is a final shaped by contrasting journeys. Senegal have quietly gone about their business from their base in Tangier, navigating their way into a fourth AFCON final and their first since lifting the trophy in 2021. Morocco, meanwhile, have turned Rabat into a fortress, playing all their matches in the city as they reach their second final and their first since 2004.

Despite a long-standing rivalry, this will be the first time the two nations meet in an AFCON final tournament. Morocco hold the historical edge across 31 previous encounters, winning 18 to Senegal’s six, with seven draws. Recent meetings also favour the Atlas Lions, including their dramatic penalty shootout victory over Senegal at the 2024 African Nations Championship.

The rivalry itself is steeped in history, stretching across decades of World Cup and AFCON qualifiers. Senegal famously edged Morocco on goal difference to reach their first World Cup in 2002, while Morocco eliminated Senegal on the road to their only continental title in 1976. Each meeting has added layers of intensity and narrative to an already compelling fixture.

History also leans kindly toward the hosts. Morocco become the 15th nation to reach an AFCON final on home soil, and recent omens are encouraging. Tunisia (2004), Egypt (2006), and Côte d’Ivoire (2023) all lifted the trophy as host finalists. The last host nation to lose a final was Nigeria in 2000, a reminder that while home advantage matters, destiny is never guaranteed.

Beyond history, the final renews the classic continental duel between North and West Africa. This will be the ninth AFCON final between the two regions, with honours evenly split. Senegal know both heartbreak and glory in such clashes, losing to Algeria in 2019 before defeating Egypt on penalties in 2021 and now face a North African host nation in a final for the first time.

Fine margins are likely to define the outcome. AFCON finals are often cagey affairs, with 1–0 and goalless draws the most common scorelines and penalties increasingly shaping modern finals. Whether settled by a flash of brilliance, extra-time endurance or spot-kick nerve, Rabat awaits a night that could crown Morocco champions on home soil once again, or confirm Senegal’s growing status as one of Africa’s modern heavyweights.
