Rangers target first leg advantage against MC Alger in Abeokuta

Enugu Rangers will be looking to take a major step towards the CAF Champions League group stage when they host Algerian champions Mouloudia Club of Algiers (MC Alger) in the first leg of their second qualifying-round tie at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta on Sunday.

The Flying Antelopes are chasing a return to the group stage of Africa’s premier club competition for the first time since its rebranding. However, standing in their way is an experienced MC Alger side eager to build on last season’s quarter-final appearance and go even further this campaign.

Rangers booked their place in the second qualifying round after overcoming Benin Republic’s Sobemap 5-4 on penalties, following a 2-2 aggregate draw. The Nigerian champions have since shown encouraging attacking form, scoring 11 goals in their last five matches.

MC Alger, on the other hand, arrive in Nigeria with confidence after recording a convincing 5-0 aggregate victory over Nigerien side ASN Nigelec. Following a goalless draw in the first leg in Niamey, the Algerian champions stepped up in the return fixture, producing a dominant performance to seal qualification.

With the return leg scheduled for Algiers, the visitors will be hoping to leave Abeokuta with a positive result that puts them in a strong position to advance. Rangers, however, will be determined to make home advantage count and secure a healthy lead before travelling to Algeria.

Beyond qualification, the tie also carries significance for Nigerian football. A strong performance by Rangers could contribute to improving Nigeria’s standing in the CAF club competition rankings, potentially strengthening the country’s chances of earning additional continental slots in future seasons.

Rangers will once again play their continental home fixture at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta after CAF ruled the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu unsuitable for hosting matches in its competitions.

With a place in the group stage at stake, Rangers know that a convincing first-leg performance could prove crucial to their hopes of progressing against a determined MC Alger side.
