Speed, records, rising stars headline day two of MTN CHAMPS continental relays in Jos

Day 2 of the MTN CHAMPS Continental Relays roared to life at the New Jos Stadium, as a flurry of finals across multiple age categories delivered speed, statement performances, and a glimpse into Nigeria’s bright athletic future.

At the heart of the action was Miracle Ezechukwu, who once again stamped her authority on the women’s Junior 100m. The N-Youth Sports standout successfully defended her title in 11.42 seconds, capping off a remarkable run that saw her clock a blistering Personal Best of 11.26s in the semifinals. That time not only set a new MTN CHAMPS U-20 record but also stands as the Nigerian lead this season, elevating her to joint fifth on the country’s U-20 all-time list.

Behind her, Team MTN’s Lucy Nwankwo claimed second in 11.65s, while Rosemary Nwankwo settled for third in 11.78s. Both athletes had already made headlines in the semifinals, Lucy booking her place at the World U-20 Championships with an 11.52s run, while Rosemary posted an impressive 11.44s, her fastest time under all conditions.

In the men’s Junior 100m, Emmanuel Akolo delivered a performance that underlined his immense potential. Competing above his age grade, the Team MTN sprinter powered to victory in a wind-assisted 10.63s his fastest time in any condition. His MoC Athletics Academy teammates, Reuben Destiny and Alvin Onyeama, followed closely, clocking 10.74s and 10.76s respectively to complete the podium sweep.

Team MTN’s Toheebat Jimoh also enjoyed a standout outing, clinching gold in the women’s 100m with a Personal Best of 12.03s an improvement on her previous mark from two years ago. It capped an impressive day for Jimoh, who had earlier secured silver in the 400m with a Season’s Best of 53.88s. Ojone Akubo-Adegbe and Chidera Ajeroh finished second and third respectively in the 100m final.

Meanwhile, Okechukwu Ezeh proved untouchable in the men’s 100m, storming to victory in 10.61s. The sprinter had set the tone earlier in the semifinals with a personal best of 10.47s and carried that momentum into the final. Aina Precious (10.70s) and Enoch Dabo (10.76s) trailed behind to round off the podium.
