Temitope Adeshina soars to Mountain Regional honour after dominant indoor season
Nigerian high jump star and national record holder Temitope Adeshina has been crowned the Women’s Field Athlete of the Year for the Mountain Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, capping off a flawless and historic indoor campaign.
Adeshina’s season was defined by consistency, dominance, and record-equalling performances, as she went unbeaten while establishing herself as one of the finest collegiate high jumpers in the United States.
The athlete secured her third consecutive Big 12 Conference title and successfully defended her NCAA Indoor Championships crown, underlining her authority in the event. In every outing this season, she cleared at least 1.93m, an extraordinary run that culminated in a winning leap of 1.97m, matching both her personal best and the Nigerian national record.
Fresh off her NCAA triumph, Adeshina set her sights even higher, attempting to clear 2.00m, a height that would have equalled the NCAA indoor record. Though she fell short after three attempts, the ambition reflected her growing stature on the global stage.
Now holding Nigeria’s national records in both indoor and outdoor high jump, Adeshina’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable. Since her breakthrough year in 2024, when she rewrote the national record books, she has continued an upward trajectory clinching her first NCAA title in 2025 and gaining valuable Olympic experience at the Paris 2024 Games.
Her landmark jump of 1.97m, first achieved at the Big 12 Championships in Kansas in May 2025, has since become a benchmark of her excellence, a height she has equalled twice during the current season.
Adeshina also holds a unique place in Nigerian athletics history, becoming only the second Nigerian woman to compete in the Olympic high jump after Doreen Amata, who represented the country in 2008 and 2016.
