Tobi Amusan wins silver, hands Nigeria first medal at Tokyo 2025 World Championship

World record holder Tobi Amusan stormed to silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, clocking 12.29s to deliver Nigeria’s first medal of the competition.

The defending champion had to dig deep after a sluggish start out of the blocks, but her trademark late surge carried her into contention. She came agonizingly close to gold, finishing just behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who claimed victory in a national record of 12.24s. America’s Grace Stark completed the podium with bronze in 12.34s, while Olympic champion Masai Russell narrowly missed out in fourth with 12.44s.

The high-quality final saw Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska and the Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton both set seasonal bests of 12.49s. Jamaica’s seasoned hurdler Danielle Williams followed in 12.53s, with Nadine Visser of the Netherlands rounding off the race in 12.56s.

For Amusan, this silver medal is another testament to her resilience and consistency on the world stage, reinforcing her status as one of the sport’s finest hurdlers.
